In the 1950s, a factory car radio was still a fairly new feature, and build quality varied a lot from vehicle to vehicle. Some worked fine. Plenty didn’t, or stopped working within a year, or never sounded the way they were supposed to. People started bringing their cars in to have radios installed, repaired or upgraded properly, and a shop that did that work well built a reputation fast in a city this size.
That early reputation is the entire reason the name stuck. It wasn’t a branding decision. It was just what the shop did, done consistently enough that people started calling it by what it delivered. Seventy years later, it’s still on the sign.
Car radios turned into 8-tracks, then cassette decks, then CD players, then the Bluetooth and streaming setups people expect in a vehicle today. Basic alarms turned into remote starters, then two-way systems, then the app-controlled setups that let you start your car from your phone before you’ve even left the house. A single rearview mirror turned into backup cameras, dash cams and full driver safety systems that would have sounded like science fiction to the people who opened this shop.
Very little about a modern vehicle resembles what rolled off an Edmonton lot in 1955. The dashboard is different, the electronics are different, and the expectations customers walk in with are completely different too.
We didn’t sit any of that out, and we didn’t half-adopt any of it either. Every time the technology shifted, our team learned it properly before we started selling and installing it, rather than treating a new product category as an afterthought bolted onto the old business. That approach cost us time in the short term more than once. It’s also the reason we’ve been able to keep up for seventy years instead of getting left behind by the first major shift in the market.
Products come and go, and the vehicles themselves have changed almost beyond recognition. What hasn’t moved in seventy years is the standard the install gets held to. Every job gets done properly, tested before the vehicle leaves the shop and stood behind after, whether that’s a week later or five years later.
That’s not a line we came up with for a website. It’s how the people who trained the people who trained us worked, back before any of this was written down anywhere. It’s been passed along the same way ever since, and it’s exactly how we train the people working here now.
A shop’s reputation is really just the sum of the people doing the work, job after job, for years at a time. Our installers are trained on everything we sell before they’re let loose on a customer’s vehicle, not handed a manual and left to figure it out as they go. Some of our team have been doing this a long time, long enough that they can spot a wiring issue or a compatibility problem before it becomes an actual problem for you.
It also shows in who walks through our doors. We’ve got customers whose parents, and in some cases grandparents, first brought a vehicle here decades ago for the exact same reason someone might come in today: they wanted the work done right and they wanted somewhere they could come back to if it wasn’t. That kind of multi-generational trust doesn’t happen because of a marketing campaign or a seasonal promotion. It happens slowly, one properly finished job at a time, over a long enough stretch of years that people stop shopping around.
For most of our history, Certified Radio handled everything under one roof, consumer vehicles and commercial fleets alike. But as commercial and fleet safety technology became its own specialized world, with different products, different site requirements, stricter mandates and a much higher cost of getting something wrong, it stopped making sense to treat it as a side offering tacked onto a consumer shop.
So we built a dedicated division around it instead. That division is now Certified Commercial and Fleet Services, our sister company built specifically for fleet operators, heavy equipment and commercial vehicles working across Western Canada. Same ownership, same standard for how the work gets done, a completely different scope. If a work truck or a fleet is what brought you to this page, that’s the team you actually want to talk to.
Seventy years in, we’re still doing essentially the same job we started with: keeping up with whatever comes next in vehicle technology and installing it the way it deserves to be installed, for whoever walks through the door next. The products will keep changing. That part of it won’t.
If you want to be part of what comes next, we’re easy to find.
